Universities Allied for Essential Medicines

About Us

Interested in making a positive impact on the global health problem? If so, take action and join the UCSD chapter of Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM)! UAEM is a coalition of undergraduate and graduate students at top research institutions across the United States, Canada, Europe, and South America.

According to the World Health Organization, 10 million people – most of them in developing countries – die needlessly every year because they do not have access to existing medicines and vaccines.

As major contributors to drug development, universities (especially UC San Diego) are uniquely positioned to influence the way lifesaving medical technologies are developed and distributed. Universities Allied for Essential Medicines (UAEM) strives (1) to ensure that every relevant university-developed drug is licensed with a concrete, effective, and transparent strategy to make affordable versions available in developing countries and (2) to increase the amount and impact of university research on neglected diseases. In the course of our work, we are helping to train and connect the next generation of leaders in global public health.

You can join with thousands of students, professors, and global health luminaries around the world by adding your voice to the call for universities to take action.
